Maybin leads by three in Italy
Golf Betting Lines
05/07/2009 - Turin, Italy (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Gareth Maybin fired a course-record, seven- under 64 Thursday to grab a three-stroke lead after the opening round of the BMW Italian Open.
Maybin owns the first-round lead for the first time in his brief European Tour career.
"I was very disappointed at the time -- any time you're beaten in a playoff you're not going to be too chuffed," said Maybin of his loss at the South African Open, where he opened with a 66. "But I went home for Christmas and reflected on it. I looked at the names below me and a lot of them were highly- ranked."
Raphael Jacquelin, a two-time winner on the European Tour, opened with a four- under 67. He was joined in second place by Marcus Higley, Richie Ramsay and Christian Cevaer.
There are 11 players tied for sixth at minus-three.
Maybin parred four in a row to open his round before posting his first birdie on the par-five fifth. He also birdied the par-five eighth to turn in minus- two.
The 28-year-old from Northern Ireland moved to minus-four with birdies on the 10th and 12th.
Maybin holed a 116-yard wedge shot for eagle on the par-four 13th to jump into the lead at six-under. He drained a 15-footer for birdie on 15 to push his lead to three shots.
After dropping a shot on the 16th, Maybin rebounded with a six-foot birdie at the last to lead by three.
Jacquelin birdied the first, but tripped to a bogey on the fourth. He bounced back to birdie No. 5, then drained four birdies in a six-hole span from the eighth to move to five-under. However, he tripped to a bogey on the 16th to end three back.
Higley birdied two of the first three holes before making bogey on the fourth. The Englishman ran off three straight birdies from the fifth, then parred four in a row around the turn.
After a birdie on 12, Higley dropped a shot on 13. He erased that mistake with a birdie at 14, but ended in a share of second place after making bogey on 17.
Ramsay opened with back-to-back birdies and moved to three-under with a birdie on the fifth. He birdied the eighth and followed with another on No. 9 to turn in five-under.
After tripping to a bogey on the 14th, Ramsay birdied 15 and 16 to move within one of the lead at six-under. However, he bogeyed the final two holes to end three back.
Cevaer started on the back nine and collected his first two birdies on 11 and 12. He faltered to his only bogey on the par-four 16th. Around the turn, Cevaer birdied one, seven and eight to post four-under.
Francesco Molinari posted a three-under 68 and shares sixth place with Brett Rumford, Anthony Wall, Ulrich Van den Berg, Matteo Del Podio, Garry Houston, Daniel Vancsik, Thomas Aiken, Shiv Kapur, Fabrizio Zanotti and Ake Nilsson.
Two-time major champion John Daly leads a group of 11 players tied for 17th at minus-two.
"I love the way I'm hitting the ball. I had a lot of opportunities out there," Daly said.
Defending champion Hennie Otto is tied for 43rd at even-par 71.

Football Betting: Defensive Rookie of the Year Awards
Oddsmakers have released the odds for the 2009 AP NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Award and Seattle Seahawks linebacker Aaron Curry has been made the opening favorite.
Seattle took Curry with the fourth overall pick in April's NFL draft and plan on inserting him into its starting lineup right away. The Hawks traded linebacker Julian Peterson in the offseason, so Curry is expected to have a significant role in Seattle's defense next year and that's one of the primary reasons he is the favorite to win the NFL ROY Award.
Oddsmakers from online sportsbook MySportsbook.com have made Curry a 5/1 favorite to win this year's NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Award. Given that he was the best defensive prospect in this year's draft and how he'll have plenty of opportunities to make plays in '09, Curry offers a ton of value at 5/1.
Another thing working for Curry is the position he plays. A linebacker has won the defensive ROY award six straight times and eight of the last nine years. Jerod Mayo, Patrick Willis, DeMeco Ryans, Shawne Merriman, Jonathan Vilma, Terrell Suggs, Kendrell Bell and Brian Urlacher were the most recent linebackers to take home the award.
Following Curry at 5/1 are Tyson Jackson (Chiefs) at 7/1, James Laurinaitas (Rams) at 8/1, Brian Orakpo (Redskins) at 10/1, Rey Maualuga (Bengals) at 10/1 and Jerry Peria (Falcons) at 10/1.
All the players mentioned above are expected to start for their respective teams, but Jackson and Peria are going to have a tough time being recognized on a national level given they're both defensive linemen. D-linemen rarely put up the numbers that it takes to win an individual award like the ROY.
A couple of players with some value are Clay Matthews (Packers) at 12/1 and Larry English (Chargers) at 15/1. Matthews is expected to start at outside linebacker in Green Bay's new 3-4 defense and could rack up a ton of tackles. English, who was an impressive player at Northern Illinois, is expected to be a situational pass rusher for the Chargers and could rack up a ton of sacks.
